Job Qualifications

The Horticulturist will be primarily responsible for providing active oversight of garden areas along Belmont Avenue at West Laurel Hill, including but not limited to Telford Gardens, Makom Shalom, Hero’s Memorial, Chesed Shel Emet, Southlawn and Lower Merion Synagogue sections. This position will be responsible for maintaining these areas to a high standard using horticulture Best Management Practices and sustainable landscape management. Additionally, the Horticulturist will support the Senior Horticulturist and Arboretum Manager in all aspects of landscape maintenance for the arboretum, including living collection management, garden design and implementation, and coordination with other cemetery departments. The Horticulturist will also be responsible for overseeing seasonal staff, interns and volunteers.

Education and Experience

Qualified candidates will have extensive knowledge of cultivated taxa, proper tool use, and horticulture best management practices. Minimum 5 years of experience in public gardens or private horticulture with minimum 2 years in a supervisory role preferred. Minimum of a high school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field preferred. Candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a group, under direction from supervisors and/or in a supervisory role, and in a variety of weather conditions. Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential. Must be able to lift at least 60 lbs. and have a valid driver’s license.
