Job Qualifications

Performs various tasks in care and maintenance including, but not limited to, planting, watering, fertilizing, bed renovation, mulching, pruning, staking, transplanting, thinning, weed control, and litter removal
In concert with the Director of Gardens & Glasshouses and Exhibition Manager, leads the horticultural design, installation and maintenance of interior and exterior exhibits associated with special shows and events
Works with and guides gardeners, volunteers, interns and students, providing appropriate direction in horticultural practices that meet or surpass the horticultural standards of the Cleveland Botanical Garden
Maintains and orders supplies, and plants as needed and keeps operational and pesticide records
Arranges and works with outside contractors and consultants as needed
Adopts and promotes sustainable management practices for gardens
Identifies, monitors, and controls pests using outdoor IPM practices
Works with Curator of Plant Collections to coordinate exterior garden plant accessions and de-successions and to maintain an accurate collection according to statements of purpose
Helps maintain a safe and productive working environment
Safely operates a variety of machinery and equipment including trucks, utility vehicles, sprayers, ladders, saw, shears, and pruners
Inspects and maintains small equipment in safe operating condition including sharpening and storage
Monitors and makes small repairs to outdoor irrigation systems
Enhances the guest experience by interacting regularly with guests, members and the public and responds to inquiries to create a positive experience for all
Shares horticulture expertise with other professionals and laypersons through classes, workshops, public tours, educational displays, printed publications, participation in conferences and relevant organizational meetings
Works within and across departments to articulate key stories regarding gardens and shows for both casual and deeply knowledgeable guests, helping ensure that interpretive content in scientifically accurate
Participate in ice and snow removal as needed
Performs other duties as required by supervisor

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, biology or related field, preferred
Significant practical horticulture experience in a garden of merit and deep plant knowledge will be considered in lieu of a horticulture degree
A minimum of five years of experience in horticulture with interior and exterior design experience or a related field; previous work experience in public horticulture gardens a plus
Possess a strong sense of design and layout aesthetics
Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook email & calendar, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and OneDrive, preferred
An observant initiator and self-starter
Collaborative team player
A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team
Valid driver’s license
Criminal background check pass required
