Job Qualifications

The Tour of Duty: Monday – Friday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) HOURS MAY CHANGE DUE TO OPERATIONAL NEEDS OF MANAGEMENT

Supervisory Responsibilities:

–Serves as the definitive subject matter expert for trees, establishes the long range work requirements and schedules of subordinate workers.

–Performs administrative and technical supervisory duties. Specifically, makes assignments, develops performance requirements and conducts periodic performance evaluations. Manages the organizational unit’s budget and workload. Resolves employee complaints and grievances. Provides leadership and practices non-discriminatory employment actions to ensure support for equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and requirements. Provides for employee skills enrichment through job related coaching, mentoring and training. Provides for and receives safety training and ensures that all direct reports know how to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Routinely checks to verify that subordinates are using all required PPE.

Arborist Operations

–Performs risk assessments of trees on the U.S. Capitol Grounds and Arboretum. Determines levels of risk that affect the experience and safety of the visiting public and staff, historically significant architecture, landmarks, sculptures, and other landscape features.

–Acts as an Ambassador of the U.S. Capitol Grounds and Arboretum by interacting in a professional manner with visitors and guests. Assists with their basic needs and answers questions about the historic U.S. Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, arboriculture, and specific trees on the Capitol Grounds. Provides support for highly publicized and televised special events such as the Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day concerts, National Police Memorial Week, Presidential Inaugurations, and the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree ceremonies that occur in landscaped areas. Coordinates with the staff of Congressional Members for conducting tree dedication ceremonies.

NOTE: Arborist certification by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is desirable.

CDL is Desired but not Required

Education and Experience

APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS A VALID, UNEXPIRED STATE MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER’S LICENSE AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS A VALID, UNEXPIRED D.C. PESTICIDE APPLICATOR’S LICENSE IN CATEGORIES 3A, 3B, OR 3C OR BE ABLE TO OBTAIN THE LICENSE WITHIN 24 MONTHS OF THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT.

IF THE REQUIRED LICENSES ARE NOT OBTAINED WITHIN THE TIME PERIOD SPECIFIED, THE EMPLOYEE WILL BE TERMINATED FOR FAILURE TO MEET THE CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT.

Your resume will be evaluated based on evidence of your ability to demonstrate:
1. Ability to lead or supervise a team of arborists. (Screen-Out Factor)

2. Knowledge of technical work practices specific to the arborist trade.

3. Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of arborist tools and materials.

4. Ability to detect insect infestation and tree diseases to determine appropriate corrective measures.

5. Knowledge of potential safety hazards and applicable safety precautions.
